- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.9-10.4.A: Use context (e.g., the overall meaning of a sentence, paragraph, or text; a word's position or function in a sentence) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.9-10.4.C: Consult general and specialized reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning, its part of speech, or its etymology.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.9-10.4.D: Verify the preliminary determination of the meaning of a word or phrase (e.g., by checking the inferred meaning in context or in a dictionary).
- Summative Assessment:
- Students will complete a matching test for the vocabulary words.

Lesson Opening:
- The class will begin with a bell ringer.
- The teacher and students will look at the site http://stickyball.net/jokes.html
- The teacher will lead the class through determining the answers to the jokes and riddles.
Lesson Body
- Explanation:
- The teacher will show students some very common vocabulary words that will come up throughout the Poe unit and the rest of the course.

- These are common academic vocabulary terms.
- They will come up quite a bit through the study of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado.”
- Students can match hear the pronunciation of each word on the list.
- After listening to the words, they can test themselves using the included quiz.
- The teacher will show students some very common vocabulary words that will come up throughout the Poe unit and the rest of the course.
- Check for Understanding:
- Students will work on the vocabulary worksheet for “The Cask of Amontillado”.
- Students will check their sentences using the Learners Dictionary offered through Merriam Webster.
- After checking their predictions, each student will compose five original sentences using the five words from the worksheet.
- Students will work on the vocabulary worksheet for “The Cask of Amontillado”.
- Extended Practice:
- Students will get in groups and discuss their original sentences.
- Students will read their sentences to the rest of their group members.

- ELL Jokes and Riddles-This site contains jokes and riddles for ELL students. This will be used as a bell ringer activity. This site helps with skills that are needed to analyze texts and use context clues to determine meaning of words.
- Common Vocabulary Words-This site includes some very common academic vocabulary words. These words are imperative to academic success.
- “Cask of Amontillado” vocabulary in context worksheet-to practice context clues
- Learners Dictionary-website specifically designed for ELL students.
- “Annabel Lee” text-This story comes from an ELL website.
